2006-2007 Chapter Statement
It is humbling to present this report to an elite group of students with a history of academic excellence and community service. I regret to admit that Sigma Sigma Phi at the Arizona campus of Midwestern University has existed as a resume filler. The few activities which have been planned rarely come to fruition, very few students know what sigma sigma phi is or have any idea about how to become a member, and the yearly selection process is done in accordance with tradition without concrete guidelines. Even the presentation of certificates and cords has been handled inappropriately. However I’m excited to present the changes we are making.
I must initially thank those individuals who have been the most influential in our revitalization. Dr. Tracy Middleton, our on campus faculty advisor, has stepped forward in dedicating herself to the success of this organization. Debbie Brimelow has been more than willing to answer our many questions, provide us with much needed information in order to function, or directed us to local board members or the presidents of other chapters. Lastly, a newly elected, and eager to work, presidency who are willing to go above and beyond their usual responsibilities.
The Rho-chapter has a five-fold mission this year:
I. Define Who We Are
II. To Increase Campus Recognition
III. To Initiate Community Recognition
IV. To Become Educated Concerning the Importance of Political Action
V. To Have Our Inaugural Initiation Dinner and Induction Ceremony
In order to define who Σ Σ Φ is on campus, we met as a presidency and voted on changes, or clarifications that needed to be made in our bylaws. This new set of bylaws will be voted on by our current members and will be put in place on Oct. 28th 2006.
We continue to present Σ Σ Φ during club week as part of campus recognition, a much needed tradition started by our previous presidency. We are also increasing campus recognition by assisting in the Arizona state residency fair held on campus and increasing the number of Σ Σ Φ members who tutor struggling students.
Our goal for community recognition is to sponsor at least one community service project. It may be a meager goal compared to some organizations, but it is significantly better than what we have done in the past.
Our political action committee is dedicated to educating our future physicians on the importance of political action by inviting guest speakers, or arranging time to meet with our state representative.
Finally, we, at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, have never had an initiation or induction ceremony of any kind. If it is the only goal we accomplish, we will have an induction dinner. Our students will feel and know the honor that comes with acceptance into an elite fraternity, and we will begin a tradition of excellence.
I anticipate a successful year of events and an annual chapter report the next president can be proud of.
